Tikal
Tikal (Tik’al in modern Mayan orthography) (meaning “place of voices”) is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the Mayan civilization. It is an archaeological site with over 2500 years of history, located within the Mayan Biosphere Reserve (a protected area) in the department of Petén, in Guatemala. Tikal was declared a National Park in 1955 and was the first site worldwide to be accredited with the title of Mixed World Heritage (Cultural and Natural categories) in 1979.
